This piece sums Friday the 13th and its unique powers up for me better than any other article I've read on the subject. Maybe it's because I had a nasty spill off an inner tube in the snow a few weeks ago!

The movie that was acted out for me several times by schoolyard chums well before I had a chance to see it for myself was The Exorcist. The fact that it not only lived up to the breathless hype, but exceeded my expectations, says a lot.

Oh, and Michael Bay and Marcus Nispel need to knock it off already. A lot of time and celluloid are being wasted with their nonsense.

btw, I think I already told this story, but after Prom Night premiered on Network TV, the next day so many kids were talking about Lou's decapitation during Show and Tell.

Those days were rad!

Terrific post! Even though I had a ton of older siblings, they were all gone from the house by the time Friday rolled my way, but there was always that kid at school who somehow got to see these movies in the theater and would tell us all about it at the bus stop.

The one I remember most was Hell Night. I mean, it had HELL in the title! Already it was too much for me!

I miss those days more and more all the time. When you didn't have reservations about seeing something. Many of us have been able to hold onto that childlike quality, but I find mine fading more with each film. If only new films didn't suck so much! :) I know, I'm like the Grumpy Old Man Dana Carvey played on SNL:

We went to see these movies and they were formulatic and we didn't have a cell phone to text our friends during the movie, but there were still scary and WE LIKED IT!

Great story (as usual) Unk! I was one of the lucky kids to watch it on cable at my cousin's house...most awesome movie ever...until I saw part 2 on cable, that is!

The first movie I remember being described to me scene for scene (by my babysitter and buddy, Auntie Linda) was THE JERK. Sure it's not a horror film, but the wonder and amazement I felt listening to the the funniest story ever told will never leave me. Even when I watch the movie today, I still can see and hear Auntie Linda acting the whole thing out in my Nana's kitchen...good times.

This post is one of the many reasons I love Kindertrauma so much...sorry, I always get a little mushy on Friday the 13th.
