Stream Warriors: Dedications

May 1st, 2011 by unkle lancifer · 13 Comments

UNK SEZ: I’m going to play CASEY KASEM today and present my streaming recommendations with dedications like he used to do on his old countdown show. Yes, in my youth right after I finished a cave painting, I used to entertain myself by listening to a contraption called a radio!

My first pick is called GRAVEDANCERS (2006) and it is dedicated to reader LEE. LEE wrote in to tell me how much he enjoyed this move and I have to agree. GRAVEDANCERS was part of the first group of AFTER DARK’S8 FILMS TO DIE FOR” and I think it was the only one I actually dug. It was directed by MIKE MENDEZ who also helmed the ADRIENNE BARBEAU ass-kick festival THE CONVENT. GRAVEDANCERS may not be classic material but it sure is a lot of fun. INSIDIOUS fans may want to give it a look-see as it shares some similar smiley-ghoul imagery and an equally healthy admiration towards the classic POLTERGEIST. For me it also brings back fond memories of the type of desecration provoked supernatural chills found in 1983’s underrated ONE DARK NIGHT. I like the cast very much also and here’s hoping CLARE KRAMER accepts the friendship request I just sent her on Facebook.

Next is a dedication to pal CRAFTYPANTS CAROL who recently revealed that, like me, she is koo-koo over the moon for 1982’s STILL OF THE NIGHT. I seriously adore this HITCHCOCK wannabe and find that each viewing makes me somehow appreciate it a little bit more. It’s really had a large effect on my taste in film and in opening me up to the fact that thrills needn’t be gushy and blood soaked to have impact. It may seem like lunacy to suggest that sparks fly between stars ROY SCHEIDER and MERYL STREEP but I don’t care what anyone says they do! There’s a marvelous symbol soaked dream sequence that I think everybody needs to see at least once and the score and New York setting are highly memorable too. STILL OF THE NIGHT has never been available on DVD so I urge you to give this classy, moody thriller a chance on Netflix streaming soon.

Lastly I want to dedicate kindertrauma’s best thoughts and condolences to the state of Alabama, which has suffered horribly destructive weather recently. Alabama is responsible for the production of our best pal and famed good luck charm “The Mickster” (whose birthday was yesterday!) and we hope that the state is on the mend and feeling better as quickly as possible. We heart ya Mickster and are glad that you and your family are safe. To all of our readers, have a peaceful, movie enhanced Sunday!

    Thanks Unk! I’m truly touched!

I have to say my love for Still of the Night (which, btw, I saw so many times in my youth that I could recite the dialogue – esp the dream sequence. that’s how dorky I am.) is matched by my love of Casey Casem’s top 100 countdown! They play reruns of his show on a 60s and 70s station here in Portland, OR every Sunday morning.

And I still do listen to that archaic radio thing in my car – esp when Casey is on!

Sheesh – I think I type too fast for my pea brain to catch up. Casey Kasem’s top 40 – not Casey Casem’s top 100.

Oh Unkle Lancifer! You bring tears to my eyes! Thank you so much for your kind words! The Mickster hearts you right back! It is going to be a long, tough road, but Alabama will mend in time. Keep those positive thoughts coming our way!

We need to start a SOTN fan club! Any movie that refuses to use 555 numbers in it’s phonebook is seriously badass IMO!

    Speaking of Casey….

I saw Still of the Night in the theater, and it was the only time I’ve ever seen people literally jumping out of their seats. Good stuff.

Sadly, when I went to add Gravedancers to my instant queue, it was no longer available. It is dvd only now.

Ah, I have Gravedancers on DVD. What a fun movie. Guess I’m gonna have to check Still of the Night out.

Thanks for the dedication, Unk–that made my day! Glad you shared my enjoyment of the movie. It takes a little while to really get going, but it finishes up with quite a bang. Too bad it’s not streaming anymore, though. Thanks again!

Ack! I can’t believe that Gravedancers is not streaming anymore!

I did see that it is on-demand at least here in Philly and in HD too!
