Traumafessions :: Reader David O. on School Bus Safety Short “And Then It Happened”

May 23rd, 2011 by aunt john · 11 Comments

Who would think that a safety film would leave such a lasting effect on a person? While in grade school (circa late ’70s) we were forced to watch a bus safety film titled AND THEN IT HAPPENED which was intended to scare the crap out of us and keep grade schoolers in the bus seats instead of running around screaming. This safety film is grainy and has poor audio, but it did the trick for me.

For years I wanted to watch it again and see if it even remotely held the same dread and fear it had when I was a kid. Thanks to the Internet I found it and watched it, and am happy to say that although it’s lost some of its sparkle, it’s still a treasure for me. Unruly kids, knives, pets, bus crashes and children being tossed about like rag dolls. Perfection! Needless to say I never brought a knife onto the bus after that, and I tried to make sure my bus driver didn’t have a heart condition before I acted up.

I’ve never seen this before, but after watching the first 40 seconds it has great potential .

Photography magazine? looked more like playboy to me.
How would putting a rubber band around that box stop the mouse from chewing its way to freedom?

The acting talent in these is surprisingly good.

Peggy Pope rules. I have always thought of her as the female Tom Poston.

Yep, I was shown these. There was another one where a girl is on top on a snow embankment (from snow piled up from plows) yelling at kids in the bus. She jumps on the snow and she falls through and winds up under the bus as it leaves. It is indicated that her stomach is run over and we end with her in the ambulance screaming and coughing up blood while EMTs are trying to hold her thrashing body down on the stretcher. Yep, can be disturbing…..and I wasn’t a bus rider anyway as I “lived too close” for busing to school.

I’m more horrified by him putting the dog out in the middle of nowhere then the bus accident. Poor doggy. The proper thing to do was to check the tag and take the dog home or at least give it to a police officer!

Thank you so much! Vindicated at last! For maybe 30 years I have been telling people about this film in great detail hoping someone would remember it. Nobody did. I saw it once, probably around ’76 (making me 12). Most thought my traumatic vision of bloodied kids tumbling slo-mo in a crashing bus being slashed by a knife; rodent-induced fainting; drugs, etc. was fabrication or nightmare. Nope. My memory was pretty solidly intact (except I had turned the two incidents into one crash). I had looked for this online, but to no avail until I told a good friend the story last night and she found this post. We were so traumatized that most of the kids called their parents for a ride home that day. Ironically, the lesson I took from the film is that taking illegal drugs can save your life. Thanks again. etc.tcj

I saw this video in second grade in 1982, believe it or not….The lasting memory of this for me was the bus driver fainting after they waved the mouse in her face…
