Traumafessions :: Reader Matt on Scooby Doo ep. “A Tiki Scare is No Fair”

Hey Kindertrauma and friends —

My kindertrauma revolved around the horrific episode of SCOOBY-DOO (my favorite cartoon to this day) entitled “A Tiki Scare is No Fair.” As I was an anxious and nervous child who grew into a lovably neurotic adult, I can’t believe my parents even let me watch this show.

Between the ghost drums, the haunted island far away from home, the idea of being hunted down by a maniacal tiki monster, and the evil witch doctor himself, I could’ve bought stock in Depends.

However, the most harrowing and haunting scene for me is when the witch doctor is chasing Velma and she hides in a bale of hay to escape his clutches. And he looms and searches for her, stalking and waiting until she blows her cover with a sneeze. At least this is how I remember it.

Just wanted to share and see who else (if anyone) was caused any trauma by watching good old SCOOBY.

Much appreciation,

Matt

I loved Scooby Doo as a kid! My favorite episode was the the one with the snow ghost but the one that freaked me out was when Daphne got kidnapped in Chinatown. I believe she was just thrown in the back of a van and driven off!

The werewolf always freaked me out. Those blood red eyes and that creepy noise he made. Ugh.

I remember getting wigged out by the Mama Cass episode where she claimed to be on a grapefruit diet and then she produced a cookie tray of grapefruit halves smothered in whipped cream with cherries on top. As a kid I hated grapefruit (still do) and I remember my grandma commenting that Mama Cass was dead when one of my brothers inquired as to who she was and why was she hanging out with the Scooby Doo crew… I just assumed she died from eating grapefruits.

Scooby Doo was scary and goofy fun as a kid.
One of my earliest memories – getting up early enough to watch Scooby Doo. Even earlier rewarded in Fat Albert viewings, which I also enjoyed.

I sat in front of the old Curtis Mathis (tank) with a big bowl of Trix.

I was always freaked out by the episode where Scooby finds a violin case full of money, which somehow leads the gang to an elderly puppeteer. Near the end, when they come back to question him a second time, we see him sitting at his desk, lifeless. Daphne shakes his shoulder and asks him to “Wake up!”, but his head just slumps to the side, making an awful creaking noise — it turns out he was actually a giant, human-sized marionette!

The Spooky Space Kook was also pretty unnerving, as well as the wide-eyed Captain Clemens. He was in cahoots with a sea monster that looked exactly like a cyclopean H.R. Pufnstuf.
