Name That Trauma :: Reader Tom S. on a Senior Sapling

Here’s one for your readers.

I remember watching some movie on TV, anywhere from about 1981 to 1986. It was on a cable channel and it might have been made for that particular channel. Here’s the thing. It wasn’t exactly scary or traumatizing but it was bizarre. Years later I’ve always wondered just what the heck that movie was. I want to think it was sort of a lighthearted comedy. Here’s what I remember:

An older guy, maybe in his 60’s wants to become a tree, so he regularly stands outside with his bare feet in a dirt hole. His friends think he’s just being loony. I can’t remember if he waters himself or not, but I want to think it ends with him turning into a tree.

Does this ring any bells?

Tom S.

I got it…USA network or WTBS had this one playing a lot when I was younger…the movie is Mr. Sycamore and it starred Jason Robards as a man who wanted to become a tree…kinda sketchy on the plot without looking it up…I hope that helps!

I’ve never heard of this movie before but if someone had asked me to guess who played the wannabe tree-man Jason Robards would have been high on my list. He seems to have been drawn to playing eccentrics of that flavor.

Tabonga! I’ve never heard of Mr. Sycamore, but I definitely recognize the shots from “From Hell It Came,” the movie so bad even Netflix pretends it never existed. I loved this movie when I was a kid. I wasn’t afraid of the tree monster, oh no; instead, it gave me a lifelong fear of quicksand. I really miss those late, late movies on local tv stations.

Jason Robards is wonderful. When I first read the description, the actor who immediately came to mind was Roberts Blossom. I can totally see him wanting to be a tree.
