It’s a Horror to Know You: Jaakko of The Groovy Age of Horror!

1. What is the first film that ever scared you?

A Finnish comedy horror musical called Lepakkolinna. The whole thing is on Youtube, and here’s the clip that scared the me the most:

At around 4:00 Dracula enters a room with his mouth open, and that made the six-year-old me whimper with fear. What can I say, I had never seen anything like a horror movie before.

2. What is the last film that scared you?

The original Japanese version of Dark Water managed to somehow kick me in the nuts, I thought it was boring and cliche, until suddenly it wasn’t.

3. Name three Horror movies that you believe are underrated.

4. Name three horror movies that you enjoy against your better judgment.

Hmm, well, I feel that two out of three sequels are better than the original, I guess that answers both questions better than any list would. I’m more of a horror gamer, anyway, so I’ll give you three horror games that I think are underrated:

1. Rule of Rose

2. Fear Effect

3. Galerians

Thanks for this Jaakko! And thanks for Groovy Age of Horror!

Can you believe I bought a second hand copy of “Rule of Rose” right around the time I upgraded to PS3 and I never got to play it! I may have to drag out my dusty PS2.

Thanks also for bringing Lepakkolinna to our attention! There’s nothing I enjoy more than an obscure traumatizer!

2 of Jaakko’s 3 horror games are listed in the URl linked in my “Horror to know you” below, but no “Galerians”. I’m curious to know more… The only games that I have ever played on a console were horror games that I could not get on PC (Vice City excepted).

My favorite gaming horror experience was probably the Shalebridge Cradle levels of Thief:Deadly Shadows. The first Cradle level should be mandatory teaching in level design 101.

thanks, and thank you for Kindertrauma, there are some quite universal traumatizers here.

About Rule of Rose: first time I played it, I quit after the first hour, not liking the gameplay and the slooowww start much. About a month later I decided to give it another shot, and boy was I glad I did. Picnic at Hanging Rock meets Lord of the Flies, now there’s a combo that I just can’t resist.

people seem to argue that Galerians is more scifi than horror, but I strongly disagree. Consider this: you’re a teenage kid and you wake up in a hospital, not remembering anything about your past. When you approach any adult, they try to kill you. Your only way to defend yourself are experimental drugs that give you psychic powers, but use them too much, and they short-circuit your brain. The short-term effect: your mere presence makes everyone’s head explode. The long-term effect: you die .

For some reason people don’t seem to consider this game Survival Horror, even though it has a creepy hospital, creepy mansion, creepy hotel and you definitely have limited resources. Strange.

And I’m an Oglaf fan, too, by the way.
