Name That Trauma:: Cat_Pi on a Living Toy & a Creepy Grandmother

July 31st, 2013 by unkle lancifer · 14 Comments

I just came across your fantastic site and think that you could help me! There are 2 movies I’ve been trying to figure out forever.

The first one is from the 70’s or early 80’s and I remember seeing a toy attack a woman. It might have been wooden and might have had a yellow pointed hat. I remember someone (the woman or maybe a man) chopping it up with an ax and then it came back together again. It might have been put into a bag at some point. I’ve researched tons of movies and haven’t found it. It is not Trilogy of Terror, it may have been Asylum but still didn’t seem right. This movie started my aversion to living toys. Any help would be great!

I also remember a movie or horror anthlogy show where a boy was crouched in the corner of a house while his creepy grandmother or someone called to him from the bedroom. I watched the trailer for Grandmother’s House and I don’t think this is it.

Thank you!

UNK SEZ: Ack! Not knowing the answer to a killer toy NTT drives me crazy! The only movie I can think of is PINOCCHIO’s REVENGE! Pinocchio is wooden and he has a pointy hat- although it’s blue rather than yellow. The bigger problem is that it’s from 1996 which doesn’t fit your timeline at all! Oh well, I need some kind of of image on this post, so up there he goes! Does anyone have a better guess out there? And what about that creepy grandma? Help us out! In the meantime, let’s watch the trailer for PINOCCHIO’S REVENGE simply because it’s awesome…

I thought you’d know this one, Unk. I suspect highly that the toy one is The Dummy. It’s been covered here before. Oddly enough on my blog, I just finished mentioning this very film. Deja vu.

Actually the second one could be Silent Night Deadly Night.

The show about the grandmother is probably a segment of the resurrected ‘The Twilight Zone’ (1985) television show called ‘Gramma’, based on the Stephen King short story of the same name from his collection of short stories ‘Skeleton Crew’ (1985), which broadcast in February 1986.

A disturbing episode almost completely carried by child actor Barret Oliver’s (of ‘The NeverEnding Story’ (1984), ‘Cocoon’ (1985), and ‘D.A.R.Y.L.’(1985) fame) monologue with himself.

Hmmm. I don’t remember that. Do you mean R.L. Stine’s The Dummy? Did he wear a yellow hat? Feel free to put the link up to your post. I’ve got a bit of the blind spot for the Goosebumps due to my advanced age!

Thanks! Our buddy Senski mentioned that one too on Facebook. I can’t find any youtube clips but here is the wikipedia page…

Wait – what did Pinocchio need revenge for? Was it something about that island where they turned the kids into donkeys? Was being a real boy not all that he thought that it was going to be?

This is the short I was talking about. From 1982. Apparently it aired on HBO and USA in between other spots. This is actually where I first heard of the short so I’m surprised you don’t remember it.

I think he wants revenge for being given such a difficult name to spell! I keep thinking it’s two N’s rather than two c’s!

Never be surprised by my ability not to remember something! I’m amazing at not remembering stuff!

I do remember that one now that I watch it. I can’t find the post it was mentioned in though- strange.

I wonder if that’s it? There still is the problem of the missing yellow hat!

Well the guy isn’t wearing a hat but you know how memories are.

Here’s the earlier mention of it that you were searching for.

Ah, that is an old one- thanks for finding it!

Though this has nothing to do with this NTT, does anyone else remember that Tales from the Crypt with Don Rickles as the ventriloquist?

bdwilcox, I do, and I had blocked it out until you mentioned it.

I agree: the creepy grandmother sounds like Stephen King’s “Gramma” from the Twilight Zone revival.

And my memory of the film is really not very good, but that killer toy might come from another Stephen King story from The Cat’s Eye anthology… I seem to recall there’s a little gnome or troll with a yellow hat in one of the stories n that film that was fairly creepy… don’t remember if there’s an axe, though.

I’m posting to throw in for Gramma too, just read that story in Skeleton Crew, easily the best of that anthology.
Stephen King’s really everywhere, isn’t he?

Strangely I was just reading “The Raft” in SKELETON CREW last night. I did not realize Gramma was in there too. I’m going to get to that one next!
