Name That Trauma:: Woody Monster on an Ear Severing Silver Disc

August 20th, 2013 by unkle lancifer · 9 Comments

I recently stumbled onto Kindertrauma, and I’m already hooked. I would love it if you guys could help me figure out what movie scared the crap out of me as a kid. I don’t remember much about most of the movie, but there was one thing that was imprinted on my brain. I remember being terrified of this movie. There was a silver disc like object that could float and fly up to high speeds. On the side of this disc was an eye. At one point this sharp barb ejects from the disc and it rips a guy’s ear off. That probably isn’t much to go from, I was quite young when I saw the movie. If I’m not mistaken there was also a scene with some type of impish creature that was quick and darted and ducked around shelves and corners (again, it was so long ago that might not even be part of the same movie). If anyone could help, I know it would be you guys.

UNK SEZ: Thanks Woody! This one had me stumped but then I realized that perhaps the “disc” was actually a sphere and that would land your NTT right in the PHANTASM zone! I do know that in PHANTASM 2 (1988) an ear is most definitely sliced off by one of the series’ signature silver spheres! This would also fit in with your recollection of an imp as there are some hooded gnome-types running around in this picture! Taking a screen-shot of the floating devil, I even think I can see where one might imagine an eye! I hope this helps. If anybody has another guess , please let us know about it in the comments section!

I was gonna go with either the PHANTASM movies or one of the SCREAMERS movies. But I think you’re on the money there, Unk.

    JamesY,

SCREAMERS is a good guess too! My first guess was WITHOUT WARNING. The “eye” threw me off!

I’m always fascinated by how differently you can perceive things as a kid.

I remember the beginning of “Happy Days” where they show the jukebox up close and for some reason when I was a kid I thought the shot of the jukebox was an aerial view of the town they lived in.

I can totally see hoes the sphere might be perceived as a disk flying sideways with an eye on it!

It is almost positively Phantasm 2, Unk. One of the Sentinels has a small buzz saw that comes out of it to accommodate the aforementioned ear slicing. The eyeball is in the big gold sphere, I believe, but I haven’t seen the film in over a year, so I can’t immediately confirm. It only shows the actual kills in my link. ;)

D’Oh! I posted the same video that you did!

Hey there, it’s me, Woody Monster! (What a crummy pseudonym I picked for myself there)

That’s it! That’s the movie! The video above is the exact scene I was describing, and I’m glad to know the impish monsters are part of the same movie. I can see why I would have mistaken a side view of the orbs with a silver eyeball disc, but why I remember a human eye that opened and closed is beyond me.

You guys are awesome! Thank you so much!

That’s great Woody! I’m so glad we could help! I see an eye there too!

Chuckles, you’re right! It looks like there was a gold eyeball sphere in part 3…

‘Twas Eric Eddy with the gold sphere eyeball recollection.

I just looked and there are four (4!) Phantasm films. I vaguely recall there was a part 3 but I don’t know if I ever saw it. Are 3 & 4 any good?

Oops! Sorry Chuckles! That was a little late at night for me to be commenting!

A couple years ago I went through the entire series. 3 & 4 are interesting because they bring back A. Michael Baldwin as Mike. But things get increasingly surreal, abstract and fantasy driven. Depending on your taste they might be worth a watch. I’m very open to sequels but for me none of Phantasm’ssequels come anywhere near the original!

btw- is anybody else being driven insane by the fact that when you visit kindertrauma you hear the music for that library show video Aunt John posted?

I watched all 4 Phantasm movies with my girlfriend’s nephew in one sitting a little while ago and had an absolute blast! honestly, it’s a whole different experience watching that incredible, fantastic, abstract and surreal story unfold. And yes that music is driving me nuts!
