Name That Trauma:: Daniela S. on an Eerily Empty Cockpit

February 3rd, 2014 by unkle lancifer · 8 Comments

Howdy Kindertrauma,

I’ve been enjoying your wonderful website for years, and today I’m in need of help with an unknown trauma. I’m not entirely sure if this reaches into the horror genre, but a friend of mine is looking for an old sci-fi flic in black & white, possibly from somewhere between the 1940s and 1960s. Several persons are picked up by an airplane/shuttlecraft (registration could be something like DC-3) to be transferred to a secret place. One scene shows a passenger entering the craft’s cockpit in mid-flight and finding the pilot’s seat eerily empty.

Does anyone have any idea what movie is hiding behind all this? Thanks a bunch for any feedback!

Cheers & wishing you lotsa more fine & fearsome traumata, Daniela

I remember this as well. The thing that creeped me out the most is that all the controls and dials were moving as if by some unseen, invisible hand.

Maybe The 27th Day (1957)? Five people are transported to a spaceship, given some destructive capsules by an alien, and returned to Earth.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, and I don’t remember if one of the passengers gets a look at the control room before the alien appears.

The scene takes place in ‘This Island Earth’, after scientist Rex Reason successfully builds an “interocitor”. He is picked up at a foggy airport in a DC-3 to be transported to a secret research base. After they are airborne, the plane turns out to be remote controlled.

You guys are good! all I could think of was Ming ripping the pilots out of the airplane in FLASH GORDON.

Yeah, tychoanomaly is right on the money – it’s indeed “This Island Earth”! Personally, I was tempted to answer “Shakma” – my very healthy solution to every unresolved horror trauma anyone is suffering from anywhere :-) Cheers & thanks a lot!
