One of the great things about the Equalizer was that at that point in the 80s there wasn’t much like it. It was a return to the totally serious, gritty television we had the decade before. And he was perfect in the part.
I’m sad today.

He was also outstanding in 1980’s Breaker Morant, one of the finest films to come out of Australia. RIP, Edward.

I loved him as the Ghost of Christmas Present in the 1984 version of A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott. The Equalizer was awesome too.

Another great (but forgotten) Woodward flick is the endlessly creepy “The Appointment.” It’s a horror flick that maintains a shroud of dread for most of its runtime, punctuated by the occasional violent shocker (you can check out the opening scene on YouTube; watch the crushed musical instrument) and a finale and conclusion that will freak you out.
Never released to DVD.

My father used to watch THE EQUALIZER (He used to watch V and the 80s version of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS too: now that Im older Im starting to realize Dad was pretty cool!) and I remember as a little kid thinking it was a really good premise for a show, but never watching it.
My only familiarity with Edward Woodward is THE WICKER MAN, and Im pretty cool with that because I like having my only memory of him being him stuck in that thing screaming his head off. That was a cool ass movie and it amuses me that they tryed to re-make it and they flopped so HUGELY!

My son and I are both huge fans of the original ‘Wicker Man’ (the remake did indeed suck but wasn’t it still a little gratifying when Nicolas Cage punched Sister Beech in her self-satisfied grill? That was my favorite part.), and I loved The Equalizer. Edward Woodward’s passing makes me very sad.
