Images of Film:: Darkness

August 2nd, 2010 by unkle lancifer · 8 Comments

I got tagged by the JOHN KENNETH MUIR to do a meme (check out his “Images of America” HERE.) The concept comes from over yonder at CHECKING ON MY SAUSAGES and THE DANCING IMAGE. The idea is to pick a theme and to select images that, “Stand for so much of what makes cinema such a rich and exciting medium.” I took it easy on myself and chose “darkness” as my theme and the images I selected are below. I put the titles of the films in the comments section.

Before I forget, I’m supposed to tag five more folks to keep this thing going. Don’t feel obliged to comply if you are listed. If you like, just take it as a compliment on your screen-grabbing charms! ARBOGAST ON FILM, LOVE TRAIN FOR THE TENEBROUS EMPIRE, BAKING WITH MEDUSA, MY NEW PLAID PANTS and THE HAUNTED CLOSET!

    Holy smokes, this is an imposing and terrifying gallery of  cinematic imagery, with stills from the works of  Carpenter, Polanski, Zombie, Lynch and other greats (Aja, Hooper, Burton…).  Number 8 fromInland Empire is one of my favorites in the gallery (right down to the scrawled sign for the time/space displacement portal AXXnn).   And I must admit I find the image  from Session 9 irrationally but perpetually terrifying….the plunge into total darkness ahead (in a basement no less).  I knew you’d present something memorable and gorgeous (and deeply scary…)  in this post, and you sure as hell did! best, JKM

    Great theme & images. At first glance I recognized only The Seventh Victim & Rosemary’s Baby. Glad you included a guide in the comments, but I kind of liked the non-recognition too – makes it even spookier. Thanks for jumping in!

    Wow, these are incredible! I am a fan of Inland Empire. That was some kind of movie!

    I have to ask though, is the one from Irreversible a still of the main actress? Because she needs a sandwich! I thought the actress in that movie was supposed to be so curvy and everything. Of course, it might not be her at all!

    This was fantastic! Thanks for these!

    JKM,

    Thanks for inviting me to join in on this meme. I had a hard time thinking up a theme but the other night I was watching Toolbox Murders and I just got into all the masses of dark black space and it gave me the idea. (So thanks to Tobe too!) I have to say, It’s wasn’t difficult finding “darkness” in Lynch’s work!
    MovieMan, that’s great you recognized Seventh Victim, what a haunting movie that is and thanks for stopping by and allowing me to jump in!
    Amanda, Yep, that’s Monica Bellucci. I think the shadows probably make her look a bit thinner than usual but she could still use a sandwich. I don’t advise trying to eat one while watching Irreversible though!

    I actually walked out of Irreversible. I didn’t care for the camera movement or the old guy’s ballsack. We didn’t get more than 15 minutes in when my friend leaned over and said, “You want to get our money back?” And then we went hom and watched Urban Cowboy.

    I don’t plan on ever seeing it, but I’ve been told Irreversible plays a bit better on the small screen because of that camera work.

    Ah yes, Alice Cooper getting ready for one of the most memorable improvised-weapon kills in horror history – death by Schwinn!

    Amanda, I totally understand. i was mortified by the opening credits of Irreversible.

    Chuckles, props to Alice for re-cycling!
