The Horror of The Love Boat!

December 16th, 2013 by unkle lancifer · 15 Comments

Did you realize that before they appeared together in THE FOG, legendary mother daughter horror icons JAMIE LEE CURTIS (HALLOWEEN) and JANET LEIGH (PSYCHO) took a cruise on THE LOVE BOAT? It’s true! In fact it was CURTIS’ first post Haddonfield venture and notably the only time the two played mother and daughter on screen.

Do you remember when FRIDAY THE 13TH’s mega momma BETSY PALMER appeared in the same episode as head-turner LINDA BLAIR albeit in separate storylines? Who could forget that once in a lifetime horror star configuration?

For one fantastic decade, whether one was climbing up or down the ladder of fame, there were two places they could always rely on finding themselves welcome, in a horror film or on “The Pacific Princess” better known as THE LOVE BOAT! Hey, why not let’s check out a few more horror pals who tested their romantic sea legs? Who cares if it was before, during or after this amorous ship sailed? I have a feeling this is going to be exciting and new! Come aboard! We’re expecting you!

    Great list!

Does anyone remember the episode in which a six-year-old passenger was possessed by the devil, so they had to perform an exorcism?

Every now and then she would call for her mommy, but then the demon would surface and chase her mother away. I think they determined the exorcism had to be performed on June 6 at 6 a.m., or something like that.

I didn’t watch this show often, but I saw that episode while staying at a relative’s house. Or was that on Fantasy Island?

Dustin- Apparently that aired the night of the Fantasy Island/ Love boat crossover. They had a special half hour of Fantasy Island with the possessed girl then a Love Boat episode involving Loni Anderson whose character then stops by Fantasy island. I wish I could find a better youtube clip!

Love it!!! Don’t forget about Billy Barty! He was in the Roger Corman not-so-classic, “The Undead,” and played a baby in “The Bride of Frankenstein.” His one episode stint on “The Love Boat” consisted of he and his wife, who was also a little person, trying to reconcile with their adult son, who is six feet tall. Oh, and to make a lot of puns about his own size and tag each one with a, “Who said that?” I tried to find video of it, because my words do it no justice, but for some reason the only results I get are Michael Landon being roasted on The Dean Martin dais.

    DDD,

I know that episode all too well! I still say “Who said that?” after a bad joke. That became me and my little brother’s catch phrase after that episode aired!

Wish I could find it online too…

Sadly, I only had two seasons to access here so as lengthy as this list is it’s far from complete. I suppose it could be about 5 times longer!

    oh man this is hilarious!!!

too bad Charo wasn’t in a horror movie :)

Unk, the “Who said that” line is a constant in our house. My wife and I pull it out after lame one-liners so much that our son has picked it up from us. We even occasionally use it at parties and never explain to others why we do it. It is one of many reasons that our neighbors don’t invite us over.

That big 80s perm really suited Kim Darby!

    Unk,

That video of Charro singing the Love Boat theme is priceless – you can’t be topped! That video should have been burned onto the golden disks on the Pioneer intergalactic spacecraft, to show the universe the zenith of Earth civilization in the 1970′s. In fact, I think I flashed back through the entire 1970′s in less than three minutes during that video – it represented it all.

Come to think of it why doesn’t AMC or another cable channel come up with a an homage/parody show to this, called something like, “Romance Cruise”, where washed-up celebrities from the last 30 years could have one last gasp at fame, while mired in some lame 70′s-inspired melodrama mini-story?

    Carol,

I thought the same thing! I was going to finish the post with “Now somebody please cast Charo in a horror movie!”

    DDD,

So glad I’m not alone on the “Who said that?” tip! BB was the man and he totally stole the Dr. Shrinker show!

    Wednesday’s Child,

Darby is hot to trot in her episode!

    Dr. Future,

They do need to bring back that format! Can you believe I met Charo in an airport once? She has not aged a day.

    Folks,

How weird is this- yesterday when I was working on this post I was on the fence about including Joan Fontaine because Rebecca and Suspicion are not exactly horror films. So I asked John what he thought and he started telling me all about how she’s estranged from her sister and- can I believe she’s still alive? So I looked her up on Imdb because I was curious if she was still alive and I decided to include her in the list because working with Hitchcock is close enough to horror and I can’t I get enough of Rebecca anyway because it rules. Then a couple hours later it came out that she died! My theory is, she’d probably still be alive if I didn’t look her up on Imdb. Although in my defense, she was pretty old.

Here is the incredible Betsy Palmer/Linda Blair episode…

Check out Palmer’s delivery of “I keep trying to tell you that” around the 6 minute mark. Pure Voorhees!!!

This is SO awesome! Love Boat and Fantasy Island was a Saturday night staple for me as a kid. Leave it to Unkle Lancifer to do something so creative!

So much awesome in this post.

I watched Love Boat religiously as a kid.

I thought Churro was the HOTTEST!

This list is the awesomest!! I’d like to throw in my shout out to Sonny Bono on this list in his epic preformance as Deacon Dark, the Alice Cooper/KISS hybrid with a heart of gold underneath the glitz and glam and deviltry. Look up his hit SMASH IT on the youtubes if you want a 70′s size smile for the holidays!

  • 14 unkle lanciferNo Gravatar // Dec 17, 2013 at 9:19 pm

    Thanks Mickdter & darkko!!

Bigwig, thanks for the heads up on Deacon Dark!

Incredible! SMASH IT should have been a smash hit!

Wow! Now that’s what I call a list. Who knew so many Love Boat guests appeared in all those horror movies. Makes my childhood memories that much sweeter.

    Great job, unkle.
