George Tooker vs. the Body Snatchers

June 23rd, 2010 by unkle lancifer · 4 Comments

I can’t watch PHILIP KAUFMAN‘s 1978 version of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS without having GEORGE TOOKER‘s 1950 painting “Subway” come crawling into my mind (for the painting in full please look HERE). After my recent viewing of SNATCHERS, I decided to Google around for some other examples of TOOKER‘s work and found several others with a similar vibe. After a while I started wondering why TOOKER‘s incredible work was not more wildly known, then suddenly the answer became clear…it’s a conspiracy!

I’ve never come across this artist before – I have to say I love the claustrophobic feel of his pictures; they remind me of the novels of Ramsay Campbell, whose more recent output has moved from plain ol’ horror to paranoia and fear of barely glipsed shapes.
Great post. Now I have to go and find a DVD of Invasion of the Body Snatchers!

I hadn’t seen anything by this artist either, and I have to say, it’s rather fantastic. Very disturbing.

I have heard of Ramsay Campbell though, he’s pretty incredible.

Truly masterful post. I was familiar with the artist, but I appreciated how this post connected with the ‘Body Snatchers’ post. (Which was very well written.) I look forward to visiting every day. Yours, Mike.
