Name That Trauma:: JDS on a Foggy Western Children's Book

Dearest Unkle,

when I was a kid (circa 1993) I had a spooky children's book that I'd like to describe to you to see if anyone can name it so i can locate a copy

It was a western. The town had the word "Gultch" in it which I think may have also been in the title. There was a fog so thick in the town I believe the narrator says you could hammer a nail into it and hang a picture. Someone spooky comes to town, a tall Frankenstein's monster looking character and something spooky happens.

That's all I can remember. I've searched for spooky children's books online, books with the word "Gultch" in the title, books about fog.

I come up with nothing.

Can your readers offer any help??

Thanks
-jds

I believe I read this book. I don't know the name yet, but tell me if these additional aspects line up. The story was set in the Old West or at least had a Country-fied vibe. The protagonist was a boy of about 13. The Antagonist was the Monstrous looking guy who showed up in town as perhaps a Snake Oil Salesman. The book was illustrated in black and white line drawings. There was also a phrase describing a valuable coin that was integral to the plot, described as "rarer than a hen's tooth" which stuck with me after all these years, in addition to the fog description you mentioned. The monster man broke into the town's bank safe, as part of his grand scheme.

While we are on this wonderful subject, does anyone remember this gem – GWOT! Horribly Funny Hairticklers ? As great as the art is on this book, it holds not a candle to GWOT! I wanted it o find a copy for my sister, but it only had a single printing, and prices average 400 dollars! The book had three short stories, the most memorable being “The Hairy Toe”!

that sounds familiar thenewbigwig but I'm drawing a blank.

The book I'd really love to get ahold of is one of those Where's Waldo type books with the overfilled pages and you're meant to find a few items. What are those types of books called?

Anyway, this one was a monster book at a monster castle and each page was filled with monsters and spooky stuff. You were meant to find the story's hero and a handful of other things it asks you to.
