Stream Warriors :: Carriers, The Offspring & Candyman

February 13th, 2011 by unkle lancifer · 14 Comments

Ugh, I hate the name “Stream Warriors” it makes no sense. What was I thinking? Here are three more movies currently available on Netflix streaming which you can watch if you want to.

CARRIERS

Thank God my friend STEPHEN KING texted me about this movie (or wrote about it in EW-who remembers?) otherwise I would have never given it a proper chance. It is the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine-a-lly ready to forgive PIPER PERABO for COYOTE UGLY. If you are already missing THE WALKING DEAD and you don’t mind a movie that seems like a zombie movie but has absolutely zero zombies in it than this is for you. CARRIERS made me really care about its characters even (and in particularly) PIPER and that is nothing to sneeze at. If you feel that you must sneeze at it though, please wait for me to put on my hazmat suite. Read more HERE.

FROM A WHISPER TO A SCREAM

I always knew this fellow as THE OFFSPRING but if wants to go by this title, I’ll try to support it even though now I’ll have THIS ICICLE WORKS song stuck in my head all day. I guess it’s better than “Keep ‘Em Seperated” in the long run. Here we have another horror anthology and don’t you just love those? Alright I don’t remember all of the stories here but one is the Readers Digest version of CHILDREN OF THE CORN and one stars CLU GULAGER and you can’t even tell it’s him because he’s such a chameleon. The syrup on this stack of flapjacks is a wrap around soiree featuring VINCENT PRICE and my own personal Jesus SUSAN TYRRELL. I don’t have to sell you on the PRICE, you either adore him or you’re bonkers so let me just say that any movie with TYRRELL in it must be watched. If she didn’t become a horror household name after her performance in NIGHT WARNING I guess she never will, but in this fan’s head she sits on a throne. If you like the idea of an AMICUS style treasury dipped in a little eighties flavored squish, it’s time to head to the wacky town of Oldfield. Read more HERE.

CANDYMAN

Just as in the case of VINNIE PRICE, I know I’m preaching to the choir by throwing CANDYMAN into the bag. The question isn’t whether you’ve seen CANDYMAN but when was the last time that you did so? Did you know this movie gets better every year? It’s like wine or cheese or that Q-BERT game. Contrary to what you may have heard February is Black History Month. Why not spent it with somebody who has a hook for a hand and bees swarming out of his mouth? For a more complete Black History Month experience eat a peanut butter sandwich while watching the film. Peanut butter was invented by Geroge Washington Carver who was also black but without the hook and bees thing. Read more HERE!

sheesh – now i’m gonna have “keep ’em separated” in MY head all day.

btw – susan tyrell is freaking amazing, soooo underrated and way too seldomly mentioned as far as i’m concerned. she is really amazing in I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN – which isn’t horror but it’s a pretty amazing mix of cheezy and bizarre – so it’s worth checking out. especially for susan. netflix has it but not for streaming unfortunately.

The other day someone mentioned Black History Month and the first thing to pop into my head was CANDYMAN. REALLY! We need MORE Horror heroes and villains! The only ones that I can really think of is CANDYMAN, the guy from NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and maybe that black kid that gets to live at the end of the original NIGHT OF THE DEMONS.

Okay…wait….Pam Grier in SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES!

But still. Thats nary a handfull!

We are, we are, we are but your children
finding our way around indecision …

I love that song so much, but “Whisper to a Scream” the movie is a bit of a disappointment (despite Vincent Price’s minimal role in the narration scenes).

    cmcmcmcm,

Tyrrell amazes me too. I love her in ANGEL and there’s a Drew Barrymore movie called FAR FROM HOME that I also adore her in . It’s not even mentioned on her wikepedia page but she was nominated for an Academy award for her role in Fat City with Stacey Keach.

    I found this on Imdb:

Supposedly, ‘Tennessee Williams’ once confided to her, “My favorite actors are 50 percent male and 50 percent female. You, my dear, are neither.”

    MamaSweetpeaches,

    Don’t gorget Sugar Hill!

    Warpedrecord,

I think a couple of the stories in WTAS are pretty weak but I’d hate for a movie with such great actors in it to fall into the Netflix woodwork. Plus, I gotta anthology soft spot. Man I used to have that Icicle works album on vinyl. Those drums always reminded me of Bow wow wow!

i have FAT CITY in my queue but i think i forgot why till now. i’ll have to bump it up pronto!

i just found this on youtube – i don’t remember it at all but wish i could see it now. too bad all these old cool shows are all held captive from the people who really want to see them.

First off, I love the name “Stream Warriors”…but I’m a big NOES nerd, so there ya go.

Second, kudos on some great recommendations. I actually found WHISPER TO A SCREAM a couple weeks ago while looking for some obscure streaming gems. I actually enjoyed it, especially the creepy first story with Clu Gulager and his weird sister. Very unsettling. Between that and AFTER MIDNIGHT, I’ve been on an anthology kick lately. Have you seen SCREAMTIME? It’s another obscure anthology I found on netflix streaming. Kinda fits with the theme. Not as good as the other two, but worth a watch if only for some creepy puppets and killer garden gnomes. Can you really go wrong with that??

    Spacecowboy,

OK I’ll keep the Stream Warriors moniker. All I need is a little positive feedback and I’m set. Meanwhile, I was all set to miss SCREAMTIME but puppets and gnomes? That’s all I need to know.

    I now watch that.

If anybody else out there catches some good stuff on Netflix…leave a comment here as SC just did. That’s what it’s all about if ya ask me!

    Sigh…
No Screamtime available for us Netflix users here in Canada. I have literally been waiting about 25 years to see this again and have searched everywhere and thought I scored with Spacecowboy’s post but no go.
I actually wrote in some time ago with a Name That Trauma trifecta, one of which was identified as Screamtime. Funny that the closest I’ve come to tracking it down was here. Hopefully it will make it’s way north and I’ll finally be able to see this one again.

I love this new column/feature (“Stream Warriors”) but if you don’t like the title, how about “And Now The Streaming Starts…!” 😉

  • 12 unkle lanciferNo Gravatar // Feb 14, 2011 at 10:54 am

    sob317,

That stinks. I’ll have to watch it now just for your sake. Nothing drives me crazier than a movie I want to see being unavailable like that!

Meanwhile the trailer for Screamtime is telling me that it has to be my new favorite thing on Earth…

    Brother Bill,

I LOVE that name but there’s already a blog called “And Now the screaming starts” so I don’t want to step on any toes. Perfect name though….

I have never seen either Candyman or Carriers, though Carriers is on the Netflix queue. However, thanks to a local TV channel known as the THIS channel, which plays a lot of movies, revolving around a certain theme, almost all day, I was able to see From A Whisper To A Scream last summer. I absolutely loved it, as I love most slightly cheesy horror movie anthologies that seem to be made for TV.

    Square:

You’re totally right about the “Whisper to a Scream”/Bow Wow Wow drums. Very tribal!

“And I cry at night, do you wanna hold me, hold me tight …”
