Name That Trauma :: Reader LeeAnn on Fatal Water Tower Games

I remember being a kid and walking into the living room while my mother was watching a movie on television.  I watched the remainder of the movie and found it very scary.  It was about some kids (teenagers?) who were playing in/around a water tower, and I think one of them fell inside or got pushed inside.  If I remember right, the kid ended up dying.  I could be way off, but I was hoping someone would be able to tell me what movie I’m recalling.

UNK SEZ: Yikes, another day, another “Name That Trauma” stumper! I feel like I’ve seen this before. It kind of reminds me of THE OTHER but I think those kids where messing around in piles of hay. Wasn’t there another movie where a kid fell into a silo of corn and suffocated in it? Falling into a water tower reminds me of something that might happen at the beginning of C.H.I.P.S. Gee, LeeAnn I’m not quite sure what this may be. If anyone has any ideas please dump them in to the comments section…but be very careful around the comment section edge, it’s very slippery and several readers have been known to fall in, never to be heard from again!

If I recall correctly, “The Dark Night of the Scarecrow” had a dude getting buried in a grain silo also.

You are correct, Prof.W.V., one of the dudes that shot Bubba was mysteriously buried in a grain silo.

Didn’t Stephen King’s IT have a scene with a boy and a water tower? I know it was in the book, but I’m not so sure about the movie. Just a suggestion.

Could it have been a TV show from 1959?  I did a search on imdb and found this:

Plot summary for “Rescue 8” Initiation to Danger (1959)

During a school initiation challenge, a boy must climb to the top of a water tower, enter it through a scuttle hatch door and retrieve his keys that his peers have dropped into the water inside the tank. After the boy that is monitoring the initiation locks the scuttle hatch door from the outside, he falls a short distance and is knocked out. A passing motorist sees this and calls RESCUE 8. Wes & Skip rescue the monitor and when he awakens they find out about the initiation pledge that is still locked inside the water tank. With the water level in the tank slowly rising, Wes & Skip must devise a plan to rescue this young man.

I think I must of been thinking of DNOTS (no, not Don Knots, Dark night of the scarecrow) I knew there was a reason those silos were dangerous! I know a kid drowns in a water tank in DARK WATER but that one is far too recent.

Mariam67, I don’t think the water tank in IT made it to the movie but here is a picture of the very one King based the one in the book on (scroll down a bit)

this is (i’m pretty sure) a movie called ‘paradise’. i know for sure that the main kid in the picture is elijah wood, and that this movie came out in the early 90’s. this movie also stars (ha) melanie griffith AND don johnson. so if i’m wrong about the water tower scene, at least it’s still traumatizing.

Jovanmusky,

I found this in a synopsis of the film “THE WAR” with Kevin Costner and Elijah Wood (1994) Is this what you were thinking of?

“They try to keep possession of the fort through a dare—Stu and Leo Lipnicki will climb the Water Tower and swim across the whirlpool inside as it drains. Leo backs out, but Stu completes the dare.”

Thanks Unkle Lancifer! That’s pretty cool! I like it when I see something in real life that made it into a book.

I do believe “Paradise” is probably the movie I’m thinking of, mainly because of the year it came out.  1991, I was 4 years old and that’s the right time frame I’m thinking of.  I can’t be absolutely certain though, because having been only 4, my memory of the movie isn’t very detailed.  I thank you all, however, for your thoughts!

I just watched “The War” for the first time last month.  It has kids playing in a water tower and tragedy ensues!
